Void, a poem

Void

The sky turned brackish crimson
while flickers of ash spiraled into fog
that pressed against my window casement.
An earthquake left its prints smeared
around a power line,
snapping the spine with its grip.

A wooden crucifix ignited the air
and turned day to lustral night.
The great beast entered my mind;
He urged me to descend to the quarry
where oblivious dead still toiled.
He claimed that work would set me free,
echoing my words from long ago
towards those I deemed subhuman.

The precipice lay ahead of me
and concealed nothing but darkness below.
I asked the beast for another path.
He sighed and brought me to the utility pole
aflame with licks of sulfurous cobalt.
An eye opened above me,
ordering me to kneel.
Written on its iris was a single word.
