Three Poems: Ambition, Janus, Street Art

Ambition - 09/18/26

Our guide once told us that
the mountains seem like fallen angels
entrapping men who worship glory
at visages of ancient shrines.

When heaven is a handle of good whiskey,
what mountaineer protects themselves
from mad dreams of fame and adoration
or praise from one's stone goddesses?

Janus - 09/22/26

The dauphin steps like morning dew,
four libations of perfume to dust his feet,
mask upon his rosy cheeks
a papier mache of filigree violets.
Only holy words escape his lips.
With a look, bids Veneficus
teach his former courtier
the shame of pilfering secrets.

Street Art - 09/30/26

Depressed I used to run away at fifteen
photograph graffiti and hang with anarchists
Afterwards Ben’s Chili Bowl on U Street
That was back when the metro ran till three
Fell asleep at the Peace Vigil tent

One of them handed me a bolt cutter and spray
Follow your dreams he said
but I was too scared of charges
Walked home on Florida Ave dodging fiends
The things I did not to feel alone
